What Causes a Wet Basement?

DID YOU KNOW?

You can have water issues in your basement without heavy rains or pools of standing water! It's obvious to see water seeping through your basement wall or a crack in the floor, but what's the REAL cause of your basement water problem?

The Clay Bowl Effect

When your home is built, soil is excavated and replaced around the completed foundation. When this is done, is obviously isn't as dense or tightly packed as undisturbed soil that is farther away from the home's foundation. Therefore, water collects in the weaker soil immediately surrounding the house and puts pressure on the foundation walls causing cracks.

Hydrostatic Pressure

The weight of water in soils surrounding the foundation of your home applies pressure and forces the water through cracks, holes, and gaps leading into the basement.
